FAQs

Frequently asked questions
  • To receive psychological services under Medicare, you must be referred by your treating doctor, typically a GP, Psychiatrist, or Paediatrician. With a valid referral or Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP), you can receive rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. However, after your initial 6 sessions, you will need to return to your referring doctor for a review and obtain a referral for the remaining 4 sessions.

  • Depending on your coverage, it is possibly that psychological services are included. This coverage can provide rebates for sessions addressing issues such as relationship difficulties, anxiety and phobias, stress and pain management, and eating disorders.

Please note, that you are unable to claim both Medicare and on your Private Health Fund for the same invoice, only one can be used at a time.

  • Our fees typically range between $260-$270 before any Medicare or Private Health Fund rebate.

We do however offer bulk-billing to those who may require this services due to financial reasons.

  • The first couple of sessions (typically 1-2) will begin with an assessment. This usually involves answering questions to help your clinician understand you and your current circumstances. To further enhance their understanding you will be asked to complete questionnaires. During these sessions, your clinician will also ask about your therapy goals and discuss their formulation, approach and proposed treatment plan. If you’re happy with the proposed treatment plan, your clinician will than begin to work with you collaboratively to achieve your treatment goals.

  • Sessions typically last 50 minutes in length.

  • The primary distinction between a Clinical Psychologist and a Registered Psychologist lies in their training paths. Both typically start with a bachelor's degree in psychology and complete an honors thesis. A Clinical Psychologist further pursues a Master's or Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology, alongside 1-2 years of supervised clinical training. In contrast, a Registered Psychologist follows either the 4+2 route (four years of undergraduate study plus two years of supervised clinical training) or the 5+1 route (four years of undergraduate study, one year of postgraduate study, and one year of supervised clinical training).

In contrast, a Psychiatrist is a medical doctor specializing in mental health. Psychiatrists are licensed to prescribe medication, which is a distinction from psychologists who do not have prescription privileges. Clinical Psychologists and Registered Psychologists cannot prescribe medication.
